Household Hazardous Waste

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is any product labeled as toxic, poisonous, corrosive, flammable, combustible, or an irritant. HHW should never be thrown into your household garbage, toilets or sinks. It is also illegal to dump HHW on the ground or pour them down the storm drains. Pharmaceutical drugs given to people and pets also constitute a newly discovered class of HHW. As a result, they have to be given special consideration when being disposed of.

Why Proper Disposal is Important

HHW can seep into the groundwater, waterways, and oceans. This causes contamination of our drinking water, beach closures and poses health hazards to swimmers.

Round-Up Events

Examples of Household Hazardous Waste Items

Household Cleaning Products

Some common household cleaning products can cause contamination of our water, air pollution and be hazardous to small children and pets. When purchasing cleaning products, remember to carefully read the label and look for words such as "Caution", "Danger", or "Warning". Many common household cleaning products are considered hazardous and should be disposed of at a collection event. Safer alternatives exist for common chemical cleaners such as vinegar and baking soda.
